Designing a Mid-Century Modern Living Room

What is Mid-Century Modern Design?

While Mid-century modern design is certainly nothing new, as it originated in the mid-20th century, it is a design style that has steadily increased in popularity in recent years. This design style is characterized by its clean lines, minimalist aesthetic, and a functional yet elegant approach to furniture and decor.

Mid-century modern design often includes elements such as organic shapes, a mix of traditional and non-traditional materials, and an emphasis on bringing the outdoors in through large windows, plants, and open floor plans. The color palette often features bold, vibrant hues like mustard yellow, teal, and burnt orange, balanced with neutral tones like white, gray, and black.

Designing a Mid-Century Modern Living Room for a Client

Recently, we had the pleasure of designing a mid-century modern living room for a client who desired a space that was both stylish and comfortable. The first step in our design process was to establish a cohesive color scheme. We chose a palette that included shades of navy, mustard yellow, and burnt orange, complemented by neutral tones of black, gray, and white. This combination not only captured the essence of mid-century modern design, but also created a warm and inviting living space.

For furniture, we selected iconic mid-century modern pieces that combined form and function. A streamlined sofa with tapered wooden legs served as the focal point of the room, while a pair of leather accent chairs added a touch of both sophistication and comfort. To enhance the organic feel, we incorporated a wooden coffee table with a marble top, and a sleek, minimalist media console with tamboured doors. Lighting played a crucial role in setting the mood, so we opted for a gold statement floor lamp with a curved design.

The finishing touches included accessorizing with simple contemporary items. We added pops of color with throw pillows and a geometric area rug and brought in natural elements with potted plants and a few carefully selected art pieces. The result was a beautiful blend of classic mid-century modern aesthetics and personalized touches that reflected our client's unique style. The living room not only met her functional needs but also became a timeless space that she and her family can enjoy for years to come!
